چکیده

The researchers express their gratitude to the Association of American Railroads, Dr. Duane Otter, principal engineer at its Transportation Technology Center, Inc., and Mr. Bill Riehl, director of structures for Rail America for extensive assistance in seeking interested railroad owners with potential sites for field investigation of the shear spiking technique. Mr. Tomasz Gawronski, director of bridge maintenance for the Union Pacific Railroad – Southern Region, made sites available for the work described herein and coordinated all logistical arrangements for the field work. He provided technical and material support via work and safety equipment, power tools, local transportation within Texas for the CSU researchers, and accommodations, etc. for his personnel cooperating in the research. Mr. Colin Hepker was point person in making all arrangements on site and off site for the conduct of the research done on the GLIDDEN SUB 69.11 Bridge in Eagle Lake, Texas. He traveled to Colorado State University for preliminary training on shear spiking and to help plan the field work. Mr. Kevin Louis performed the above tasks for the work done on the TOYAH SUB 534.35 Bridge in Stanton, Texas. He arranged and participated in numerous site reconnaissance visits leading to the selection of that bridge. He traveled to CSU for preliminary training on shear spiking and to help plan the field work. Subsequently, he assisted in the setup of instrumentation, organized the site access, site preparation, safety protocols, and communication within the UP network regarding all train traffic passing over the bridge during the periods of load testing. Mr. Geoff Pavlicek also assisted with instrumentation setup , site preparation and technical support necessary to monitor the types of engines involved and loadings being carried by the various trains. Both these gentlemen conducted the spike installation and maintained site safety. Dr. Jeno Balogh, of Metropolitan State College of Denver, participated in the site reconnaissance visit to the Glidden SUB 69.11 bridge site. He devised the instrumentation techniques and trained the personnel who did them on site for the subsequent load testing. CSU graduate student Karthik Rechan Rudraprasad directed instrumentation set up on that site, oversaw all load testing, and performed the data acquisition work. CSU graduate student Kevin Hedin assisted with the preparation of needed spikes, instrumentation planning, and data reduction for the Toyah SUB 534.35 bridge site. Extending the Service Life of Timber Railway Bridges

Times of downturn in economy, tough competition, high costs, and large amounts of capital required for replacements have created growing need for cost cutting measures and for seeking better return on investment. This has also placed an increasing emphasis on maintenance practices to extend the service life of existing railroad bridges. This paper outlines the various factors which playa role i...

World’s First Thermoplastic Bridges

Deterioration of bridges in the United States has been well recognized. According to the FHWA National Bridge Inventory, one third of nearly 600,000 U.S. highway bridges are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Since the majority of bridges were built using wood, steel or concrete, the same conventional materials have been used for bridge replacement or rehabilitation,...

Timber Price Dynamics following a Natural Catastrophe

Catastrophic shocks to existing stocks of a renewable resource can cause long-run price shifts. With timber, these long-run price shifts may be accompanied by a short-run price drop due to salvage. Hurricane Hugo damaged 20% of southern pine timber in the South Carolina Coastal Plain in 1989. To estimate the shortand long-run effects of the hurricane on the prices of timber stocks, we estimated...

An Analytical Approach for Dynamic Response of Timber Railroad Bridges

In the 1970's it was reported that there were approximately 2300 track miles of timber railroad bridges in the United States and Canada. For short spans, they offer an attractive alternative to other types of bridges as they are economical, faster to construct and easy to maintain. Current design practices do not allow an independent consideration of the effects of the dynamic loads in sizing o...

An Overview of the Development of Stress Laminated Cellular Timber Bridge Decks for Short to Medium Span Applications in Australia

Stress laminated timber bridge deck technology has been established in Australia since 1991, resulting in the construction of over 40 prototype bridges. This paper presents an overview of the R&D undertaken to implement this technology, involving laboratory testing and field application of plate decks spanning up to 9m and high capacity cellular decks spanning 12m, with the potential to span up...
